About Port of Blyth

The Port of Blyth is the operating division of Blyth Harbour Commission, a modern Trust Port handling up to 2 million tonnes of cargo each year and operated for the benefit of all stakeholders. Established in 1882 it is one of the UK’s largest Trust Ports, contributing significantly to trade in the North East of England and supporting thousands of jobs in the region.

With particular expertise in the offshore energy, project cargo, container, dry bulk and break bulk sectors, Port of Blyth is Northumberland’s international gateway and a leading UK offshore energy support base.   Following a fantastic year, which saw turnover grow by 15% reaching a 140-year high of £25.5m and profits increase by two thirds to £2.1m the Port has been shortlisted for the coveted Company of the Year title in the Northumberland and Tyneside section.
 
Transped
Transped is the international logistics division of Blyth Harbour Commission based in Port of Blyth but operating globally.  A wholly owned subsidiary of the Port, Transped offer a full logistics, storage and forwarding service to clients – this includes a short sea container service provided through a twice weekly container service from Holland.  Additional services include import/export packing, warehousing, distribution and storage as well as worldwide forwarding.
 
2021 was a record year for Transped, achieving the highest volume of containers shipped in its history , an exciting opportunity now exists for an experienced Operations manager to join this successful Port and drive future growth for Transped.
 

The Role & Responsibilities

• Management of a team of 7/8 operators/forwarders/account managers who are responsible for the movement of loads from the continent to customers.  
• Manage and build key stakeholder relationships, working with both the Port and Business Development to increase ethe service offering to customer as well as attract new 
• Effective management of costs is key, the opportunity to move into deep sea project support could change the value offering in the future.  
• Responsibility for the effective administration of the operation, keeping up to date with relevant regulations and changes to import/ export processes
• The Port and Transped are in the process of rolling out Sage as a business system which offers an opportunity for modernisation in comparison to the current old-fashioned multi-freight system.  The Operations Manager will have an opportunity to be heavily involved in the design and implementation, developing more modern working practices to underpin the Transped future strategy.  

The Person:

Reporting into the Senior Operations Manager, we are looking for candidates who display the following skills and attributes:

• Relevant logistics sector experience is essential, need to hit the ground running, ideal candidates would come with short sea experience perhaps from a freight forwarder, unitised container/bulk cargo or 3pl company.
• Must have previous operations management experience in a solution, fast paced environment.  Previous experience in delivering efficiencies, optimising performance, modernisation of systems would all be advantageous. 
• Well developed communication skills, able to give confidence to the Port/Customers whilst leading, managing, coaching and developing their team to raise standards, expectations and belief in what can be delivered.  
• Commercially minded and customer focussed, able to manage costs, improve systems whilst improving capacity and continuing to build on existing positive engagement in the team.  
• Strategic mindset with the ability and drive to spot new opportunities and take ownership in moving them forward.
• Collaborate closely with the new BDM/Port to spot potential future opportunities.  
• Must be hands on and understand the service orientated, value added culture and mindset of the Port.  Thinking as 1 team, getting involved in operational and commercial issues and being a real team player.
